Best Places to Visit in Romania for Photography Lovers – City Edition

If you cannot get enough of the best places to visit in Romania and need a break from nature, then checkout these instagrammable cities! Call me nostalgic but the first two cities reminded me a lot of my home state. With its coloured houses and medieval cobblestone streets, both Sibiu and Sighișoara stood out as the best places to visit in Romania when it comes to city getways.

Sighișoara

In fact, it was in Sighișoara, located in Mureș County, that what a lot of Germans settled after fleeing Nazi Germany, hence its other name Schäßburg. Even until this day, while the Germans have been “bought back” by their mother country, there are annual gatherings of original families and their descendants. Make sure to climb the Old Clock Tower (Vlad the Impaler was born nearby!) and walk up the wooden, covered staircase to the old cemetery. It’s super scenic.

Sibiu

Sibiu, Härmeschtat for Germans, is a super picturesque city in Transylvania. No wonder Forbes named it “Europe’s 8th-most idyllic place to live” in 2008 and it was the European Capital of Culture in the year before. Check out the old marketplace – especially during Christmas – and get lost in the historic centre. Pastel houses, medieval city walls and the Brukenthal National Museum will just make you fall in love with the city.

Brașov

Again, the Saxon influence is undeniable, down to the old city walls and bastions. Wander the old Council Square in Old Town and look up at the Hollywood-like sign on Tâmpa mountain. However, if you are indeed German and from Thuringia, you gotta visit the Lutheran Black Church. Its history is connected to the Reformation and the story how its name came to be is also spectacular. During a big fire set by invading Habsburg forces, the inside of the church was left entirely black, along with the Madonna. She remained mostly intact but her royal blue dress had turned black, hence she is referred to as the “Black Madonna”.

Bucharest

Ok, this wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the absolutely wonderful capital Bucharest. It has such an eclectic style of architecture, blending massive city wall-like Communist housing projects with fine French architectur . Hidden passages and secret churches invite you to roam and just get lost. Plus, Bucharest has the cutest hipster cafés!
